This work is called 'Random History'. After every half a second, a meter

is selected at random and the needle then moves. Centre zero meters move

 either to the right or left. The direction is

chosen at random. The meters range in age

from the 1930s to the 1980s.

The meters are from my personal history. Some

of them  were used by my father in instruments

that he designed and some of them are from

the instruments, which I designed.  I get my

middle name Robert from the aluminium rolling

mill that the first instrument was sold to. A

simulacrum of the meter used on that  first

measuring instrument is the one to the left of

the work.
